A journey begins with a single step

In the beginning the earth was formless, then there was crude oil and history was made…

Penman Services is a third-generation family business that began with Ashton Monty Penman. In the 1930’s Monty became the first consignee and established a full-service branded Magnolia Mobile gas station in Rochester, Texas. Monty also established a propane business along with the gas station. During the 1960’s Ray Penman joined his father at Penman Oil Company and together they launched the region’s first full-service filling station in Knox City, Texas.

In 1976 Monty retired and Ray purchased his father’s business. Ray grew the business by establishing a 24/hour unattended card station and developing a proprietary Penman Fuel Card technology to ensure that fuel was always within reach to his customers. Ray also continued to expand the footprint of propane delivery services and launched the first coin-operated in Knox City. In the 1980’s Ray built unattended card stations in Haskell, Munday and Weinert. In the 1990’s Ray bought convenience stores in Benjamin and Throckmorton. In 1998 he built a convenience store in Knox City.

Ray’s daughter, Lindsey Walker joined Penman Services in 2010 to continue the Penman legacy. Penman Services built an unattended card station in Throckmorton in 2014 and in 2017 built a new convenience store in Benjamin, replacing the original ‘Ranchland’ convenience store. Penman Services expanded into the Oilfield industry in the Permian Basin when Lindsey’s husband Russell joined the Penman team in 2017. Hurricane Harvey caused a fuel shortage which opened the door for Penman’s to start business with XTO which caused the need for an accounts receivable revolver that their current bank could not provide. This led us to start business with First Bank Texas.

Covid slowed the oilfield business down enough Penman’s was able to leave the Permian Basin in 2020 and open the door to providing fuel to the Wind Farm projects. 2022 brought Ray’s oldest daughter, Jane Ann, back to Texas and back into the family business. Today, Jane Ann, Lindsey and Russell are running the business and have plans to continue grow the business and expand our footprint in the industry.
